ISO 4309 — what the wire rope inspection standard

ISO 4309 is the international standard for inspection and discard of steel wire ropes. We walk through what it covers, what it requires, and what it means for an Indian operator.

ISO 4309 is the international standard for the inspection and discard of steel wire ropes. It is referenced by crane manufacturers, statutory inspectors, and insurance underwriters around the world. If you operate cranes in India, your hoist-rope inspection programme should reference it — even when local statutes don't explicitly require it.

The short version: visual inspection alone is no longer enough. ISO 4309 recognises explicitly that internal wire breaks, internal corrosion, and loss of metallic area can develop in a steel wire rope long before any of it shows on the outside. Magnetic Rope Testing (MRT) is the standard method for detecting that hidden deterioration.

What ISO 4309 covers

The standard is split across several parts. Part 1 covers crane hoist ropes generally. Subsequent parts cover specific equipment types — mobile cranes, tower cranes, container cranes, and so on. Each part defines:

1. The visible deterioration patterns — broken wires per lay length, corrosion grades, deformation types — and the threshold counts that trigger discard.

2. The internal-deterioration indicators — loss of metallic area, internal wire breaks — that MRT can detect and visual cannot.

3. The recommended inspection frequency by duty cycle and equipment type.

4. The competence required of the person inspecting the rope. ISO 4309 expects a trained, competent inspector, not just a visual walk-around.

What it means for you

If you operate EOT cranes on continuous duty, your rope life is shorter than the OEM number on the spec sheet. ISO 4309 expects you to inspect more often than the OEM minimum, and it expects MRT in the inspection programme alongside visual.

If you operate tower cranes on multi-shift sites, MRT every 6-12 months catches the early wear that the daily walk-around misses.

If you operate offshore, salt-fog drives internal corrosion that visual inspection literally cannot see. ROPE 65 MRT on offshore hoist ropes is becoming standard practice.

What we offer

Dynamic EPS distributes AMC Instruments S.r.l. (Italy) MRT equipment in India and offers inspection-as-a-service following ISO 4309 methodology. Our inspectors are trained on the AMC ROPE 22 / 40 / 65 measuring heads and the IAS-T tablet, and our written reports reference the relevant ISO 4309 clauses for each rope condition we identify.
